EFI Conversion with Megasquirt - 3
Incidental things – those
little ‘if you want to do that, first you have to do this’ things that are sent
to try you.
The
alternator. This car already had a
Lucas alternator fitted in place of the original dynamo and voltage
regulator. This was rather feeble and
was known to have a very variable output voltage. To provide extra capacity and a more stable voltage, this 75A
Bosch unit fitted straight on. An
additional power wire was run between alternator and battery as the original
was not up to 75A!
The exhaust manifold.
The old manifold and exhaust could have been left on. In fact it would have been easier and much
cheaper. The Pheonix 6-3-1 cost more
than the rest on the conversion put together.
There were several moments when I wished I’d just stuck the oxygen
sensor in the original downpipe!
However, I was trying to improve engine breathing and it does look good,
so it just had to be done.
The Starter
Motor. Another rather irritating side effect of the Phoenix manifold
was that I had to change the pre-engaged starter I had fitted for a smaller
one. There simply wasn’t room. Canley Classics sell an adaptor kit for the
dinky little Nippon Denso reduction gear starter. Works very well.
Apparently there is a version that fits straight on without an adaptor
kit, but this is not something that is well publicised and I didn’t find out
until too late.
The Exhaust. Again not strictly necessary but the 16 year
old unipart one had a hole in it and this one sounds so much more the
part! Must have done something for gas
flow too as it completely messed up the ECU mapping! This came from Canley Classics and it’s a beauty.
